Facebook Footprints - Researching Social Big Data Patterns (2014-2017)
Funding: DKK 500.000 by Aarhus University Research Foundation

Participants: Bechmann, Anja (PI), Vahlstrup, Peter Bjerregaard

Due to the increased usage of the Facebook Platform and similar big data companies in our daily lives and the pressure on topics such as data security and privacy, we need to investigate and understand more in-depth the data footprints we leave behind and the Facebook usage patterns at national population scale more thoroughly. For this reason, this project aims to 1) program a novel scalable multi-user software ‘Digital footprints’ where researchers can have users donate their Facebook data for the research team and project in question with informed consent, 2) use the software to collect 1,000 Danes’ digital footprints and usage patterns on Facebook (e.g. for later analysis with regards to filter bubbles and uneven usage patterns on age, gender and education), 3) understand how Danes manage the visibility/invisibility of their digital footprints, and 4) identify the key methodological and technical challenges in undertaking Facebook data retrieval and analysis on a large national dataset.
